The Internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II

2:00pm 03.02.2010

On February 3, 2010, U.S. Embassy Economic Officer Marko Velikonja gave a public lecture at the Vanadzor American Corner about the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.

During his lecture, Mr. Velikonja introduced the chronology of the war, most notably how on December 7, 1941, the Japanese Air Force bombed a U.S. military base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, causing the U.S. to declare war on Japan the next day. Then speaker discussed many aspects of evacuation and relocation of thousands of U.S. citizens of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast as a result of legislation passed in reaction to the bombing. More than 120,000 people were forcibly relocated.

Approximately 20 students from different colleges and universities attended the lecture, which was followed by a lively discussion. The American Corner will organize a follow up program, a movie screening of “Snow Falling on Cedars” (1999), provided by the U.S. Embassy Information Resource Center.
