On Wednesday March 3, 2010 in the framework of “Americans at the American Corner” lecture series, the Vanadzor American Corner hosted the public lecture entitled "Smithsonian Institute."

U.S. Embassy General Office Assistant Elena Seong introduced the history of the Smithsonian Institute. It was founded with a bequest from British Scientist James Smithson (1765-1829). Smithson decreed that, if his nephew died without heirs, Smithson’s estate would transfer to the U.S. Government. It is interesting to note that Smithson never visited the U.S. In 1843, Congress established the Smithsonian Institute as a public/private partnership. The Smithsonian Institute is an educational and research institution and associated museum complex. Most of its facilities are located in Washington, D.C., but its 19 museums, zoo, and nine research centers include sites in New York City, Virginia, Panama. It has over 136 million items in its collections. The lecture was interesting and full of illustrations.

A live question and answer session followed the lecture. Over 16 participants from local universities asked a wide range of questions and gained knowledge about the Smithsonian Institute.
